Cambodia Clean Water Forum Calls for Unified Effort to Enhance Nationwide Water Access

PHNOM PENH, July 25, 2024 — Yesterday, the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) hosted the Cambodia Clean Water Forum in Phnom Penh, aimed at bolstering collaboration among public and private water operators and financial institutions to improve water supply services throughout the nation.

The event was presided over by MISTI Minister Hem Vanndy and attracted over 500 stakeholders. Discussions focused on the implementation of the Law on Clean Water Management and the enforcement of licensing requirements, the ministry announced in a press release.

Minister Vanndy highlighted the critical role of reliable clean water supply for household use, public health, investment attraction, and industrial development. He pointed out the government's efforts to provide substantial opportunities for the private sector in water service provision.

Currently, MISTI is evaluating water supply services nationwide and is engaging with financial institutions to prioritize funding for this sector. SME Bank, notably active in this initiative, has already allocated approximately US$14 million in low-interest loans to private water operators.

The forum featured contributions from financial institutions like the Association of Banks in Cambodia and the Cambodia Microfinance Association, which presented financial products tailored for the water supply sector. The Credit Guarantee Corporation of Cambodia also participated, noting that it has guaranteed loans totaling US$201 million, with a portion supporting clean water projects.

During the discussions, private water operators requested government intervention to address damages caused by infrastructure projects and assistance in developing sustainable water sources.

Responding to these concerns, Minister Vanndy underscored the pivotal role of the Cambodia Water Supply Association and called on public water utilities and private operators to enhance their technical capacity and compliance to improve water quality and access across Cambodia.
